Top 10 Tips For Joy

By Michelle Mayur

It is easy to get caught up in our materialistic society that equates feeling joyful and happy in life with acquiring material possessions. If we just have that new home, new car, new dress, etc, then we will be filled with joy...... or will we? When we do manage to purchase any of these material things, why is the associated joy and happiness usually so short-lived?

The answer is simple - the Heart and Soul are still lacking in Joy, only the mind or ego has temporary satisfaction until it needs the next 'fix' of obtaining more material possessions.

My work and passion is to help you awaken to more Heart and Soul Joy in your life, in simple, free or low-cost ways to make your Heart and Soul sing and feel truly alive.

My favourite Top 10 Tips to make your Heart and Soul sing with Joy:

1. An Attitude of Gratitude and Appreciation - Start and end every day by making a list in your mind or on in a journal of at least 5 things you are grateful for, no matter how small. It may be something as simple as your soft, warm bed or the sounds of birds outside. As you regularly focus more on all the good things you already have in your life your vibration will raise, allowing you to feel more joy in your daily life.

2. Spend Time in Nature - Go to a beautiful place in nature, such as a local park, garden, natural bushland, mountains, lake or seaside. Tune in to the energies of the trees, birds, native animals and water. Enjoy watching a sunrise or sunset in quiet contemplation or with friends. Standing in sunshine, feel energetic dross being transmuted from your energy field. Allow the energy of tall trees to drain any negativity from you.

3. Watch Children or Animals at Play - Find yourself totally involved in the moment as you watch the spontaneity and free flowing of emotions of children or animals at play. To distance yourself from any worrying thoughts, cuddle, play with or watch a happy animal. Their curiosity and delight engross you instantly.

4. Daily Laughter - Laughing exercises more muscles in the face than anything else and feels so good you just want to do more. Watch or read something funny on a regular basis to uplift your mood. A good belly laugh is a great way of relieving pent-up stress. Practise laughing for 10 minutes a day. Even if you don't think you have anything funny in your life, just watch yourself trying to laugh and you will find the ridiculousness of your attempt will trigger you into genuine laughter. Consider joining a local laughter group.

5. Fun Times with Friends - Schedule in regular time to reconnect with your social network, whether it be by phone, email, or going out together. Good friends can be our free therapist, our laughter buddy and a chance to just relax and switch off from daily challenges.

6. Reward Yourself for Achieving Goals - Each time you reach a pre-determined goal, no matter how small, reward yourself with a special treat that nourishes mind and body - perhaps a movie, going out to dinner, catching up with a friend, gulit-free downtime or visiting a special place. For the effort you have given out you are now allowing yourself to receive back, which is a powerful act of self-love.

7. Let Your Inner Child Play - It is too easy to believe that as an adult you must always be serious, disciplined and responsible. How boring! What does your inner child, that playful part inside you, want to do to have some harmless fun? Is it swinging in the park, dancing, watching cartoons, playing a game, eating a favourite food from childhood? Relax, let you inner child out to play on a regular basis and feel the joy in your life.

8. Forgive Yourself and Others - The longer you hold onto unforgiveness of those you perceive have wronged you, the more the corrosive effect it has on your mind and physical body. You have already been hurt by someone else, do you now want to compound that hurt by damaging yourself emotionally or physically? Chances are the person who has wronged you has forgotten all about it, so the only person you are hurting by holding onto unforgiveness is yourself. Practice forgiveness on a regular basis, knowing that the gift of forgiveness is for yourself. Forgive yourself for all the hurt and other emotions you have been holding onto that have been damaging you and then visualise bundling it all up and letting it go.

9. Eat Nourishing Food as close to its natural state as possible - What we eat influences our moods and behaviours far more than most of us realise. For instance, many people feel heavy, lethargic and energetically-flat after eating wheat-based foods. Eating chocolate can give you a quick high, which is quickly replaced by mild depression, causing you to seek another chocolate 'fix'. The conglomeration of additives, artificial colours, flavourings and preservatives found in the majority of packaged foods challenge our good mood and our immune system. Endeavour to eat fresh food and prepare meals yourself with basic, recognizable ingredients, organic if possible.

10. Try Something New - What have you had in the back of your mind that you would like to try - maybe painting, salsa dancing, enrolling in a personal development course or anything else that catches your interest? Just do it, let your creative juices flow and feel your spirits soar!

Secret To Living Happy And Motivated : Support Your Core Values

By Louisa Chan

We talk of dreaming big and achieving meaningful goals by living out our core values. When we align our decisions and actions to serve these values, we live inspired and energized.

Are you serving your core values? If know your top 3 values you can do a simple exercise that will show you whether or not you are serving your core values.

Let us look at your top 3 values and use "time spent" as one criteria to give us a sense of where you are with these values. What amount of time would you want to spend on activities that support each of your core values?

Then based on the past week, chart down the amount of time you actually did spend on each of these values.

For example if family, work and health are your top 3 core values, then based on the last week, how much of your waking time was spent in supporting these top 3 values?

We can take "Family Time" to be time spent being with your family members, doing things together, having discussion or sharing etc.

"Work Time" would include time you take to commute, time spent on the phone or computer doing work after you get home, time spent away from home on work trips etc.

Likewise, you can also decide the "Health" bucket to include time spent on doing groceries for your healthy food, preparing for meals, washing up, time at the gym or time spent meditating etc.

Now compare the two sets of time and see what trend you see.

If the results come as a surprise to you, then what changes would you like to implement?

Let Your Core Values Be Your Compass Knowing you values is great; yet these values do not show up in your life and are not realized unless you take actions and make corresponding decisions that support them. Having "love" on top of the list is a good start. Not acting on it or working it out will soon takes its toll and generate a feeling of guilt. The disconnect between your value and your life will cause stress.

We do not want to drift through life reacting to the daily "urgent" matters and be caught up in crisis management mode. We do not want to live in the stress zone where life is spent reacting to what is presented to us by the environment. We want to be in control and live with purpose and joy.

I hope you will take a little time to go through these exercises. The clearer your values and the more willing you are in serving these values the more inspired and purposeful will be your life. Let your values be your compass for making everyday decisions.

If you are stressed out or lethargic emotionally and mentally, you can use my short exercise on values to help you understand how to get back on track and live an inspired, energized and refreshing life again.

Knowing What Turns You On

There are so many people who want more out of life. I regularly talk with many people who know they want something different but have absolutely no idea what that 'different' might be. Many people are simply bored or unhappy where they are at in their lives - whether it's because their stuck in an unloving relationship, they hate the job they're doing or, perhaps, they've simply been doing the same job for so long that they're getting nothing out of it anymore.

Do you want more out of life? Because, if you do, you're going to have to get some idea of what that more might be. There's little point in longing for something else without knowing what that something else might look like and feel like. In other words, you've got to have some idea of what would excite you - what would turn you on. Otherwise, you'll never have a compelling enough reason to awake from the deadly slumber of normal living, where normal people are prepared to settle for their lot in life.

In recent conversation with a client who has been working in the same job for over a decade, I was struck by the extent to which she had no idea whatsoever of what she wanted to do with her life. She was looking at her options from the normal narrow-minded perspective of her perceived strengths and weaknesses, her past work experience and, most tellingly, her perceived need to pay her bills. You may find those last few words rather strange - bills are real, they have to be paid. But unless you're an absolute idiot, you're not going to do something that, from a position of financial comfort, would jeopardise your ability to meet your commitments.

Unfortunately, however, our commitments always seem to come uppermost in our minds. This is confirmed by various different recently published research findings in Ireland, UK, US and EU. This research concludes that the normal person is obsessed with money and fearful of not having enough of it - whatever 'enough' might actually mean. In other words, this obsession is endemic - over the centuries, our obsession with money has become part of the human condition. And it is this obsession that is tying you down in your mundane life and holding you back from the life that you really and truly want. So, forget about your financial commitments - they will be more than adequately looked after if you put your heart's desire first. I'm not suggesting that you be silly about deciding what you might like to change in your life, I'm simply suggesting that there needs to be a very different order to your priorities.

And, in setting your priorities, you need to know what would really - and I mean really, really - turn you on. You need to capture your own imagination with something your subconscious finds irresistible. You need to know what you would leap out of bed for in the morning. You need to be running towards that ideal life rather than running away from the unfulfilling life that you already have. So, you need to know what would excite you. And if you could get the opportunity to do what really turns you on, you must remember, you'll never work another day in your life - because there's a world of difference between working for a living and a labour of love. You need to know the kind of lifestyle you want to live - I'm not talking about cars, mansions, condos by the sea (but I'm not excluding them either) - I'm talking about what it would be like to feel that you had arrived - whatever 'having arrived' means for you. Most importantly from the perspective of your all-important subconscious mind (the part of your mind that creates your reality), what would your ideal life look like, feel like, sound like, smell like and taste like?

A strange question? Not at all. Your subconscious mind dictates your behaviour by referencing your 'snapshots' or programs and your resultant behaviour creates your life. These snapshots, when taken together, create your view of the world and weave a normal life for you. You've got to give yourself something new and exciting that your subconscious mind can focus its attentions on. You - and your subconscious - makes sense of the world through the only interface that you have with the outside world - your five senses. In order to capture your subconscious mind's attention - and create a different life (the one that you really, really want) - you're going to have to speak to it in language that it understands. You're going to have to conjure up an image of what your ideal life would look like, feel like, sound like, smell like and taste like.

Your life is dictated by your beliefs in how the world works, the primary importance of money and your ability, or otherwise to have enough of it. Your beliefs are simply your snapshots. Change your snapshots and you change your belief system. In changing your beliefs you change your behaviour and, so, your life changes. This is not some 'magic potion' approach to changing your life - this is how your mind is already working for you (or, probably, against you) at present. The key is to excite your subconscious mind by giving it a new snapshot. Once excited, the real excitement in life will follow effortlessly - oh and by the way, your financial commitments will be more than adequately catered for.

The Incredible Benefits of a "Get Better" Mindset

In this talk, researcher Heidi Grant Halvorson explores the mindsets needed to ensure personal growth. Mainly we should avoid a “Be Good” mindset — one where we are constantly attempting to prove our superiority to the world. Instead, we should embrace a “Get Better” mindset — where we always perceive ourselves as having more to learn. When we embrace a Get Better mindset, we embrace risk and are less afraid of failure, which is key to personal development

Sucking is the First Step to Being Good at Something

Alexis Ohanian has founded reddit, Breadpig, and hipmunk but he'll be the first one to tell you: "I still don't know what I'm doing."

When creating our next great work, we can be held up by failure, or by worrying what the world will think, but Ohanian urges us to remember that it's hard enough to get people to care about your success. The web allows us to fail and fail fast and we should embrace this dynamic. And when you do eventually traction, treat your customers like royalty. "Your first 100 users are magical," he says.

About Alexis Ohanian

Alexis Ohanian is a startup founder and investor in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from UVA in 2005, Alexis and his co-founder Steve Huffman started reddit, now a top 100 website. Now a reddit board member, Alexis focuses on social enterprise Breadpig.

Alexis helped launch hipmunk and ran marketing/pr/community before becoming an advisor and joining the fight against SOPA & PIPA. He invests and advises over sixty tech startups. He's Y Combinator's Ambassador to the East, co-founder of the non-profit IHAS, and is writing a book, Without Their Permission.

Along the way, Alexis spoke at TED, volunteered in Armenia as a Kiva Fellow, and was named on Forbes 30 Under 30 list two years in a row (and then turned 30). He proudly doodled the logos for all three of his startups.
